Appearance
Koelreuteria elegans is a fast growing deciduous tree that grows from between 20-50 ft. tall at maturity with a 35-50 ft. wide crown. The trunk is light brown and smooth when young and has ridges at maturity.
Foliage
The leaves are alternate and bipinnately-compound (twice divided) leaves up to 18 in. long and ovate to oblong in shape. Leaflets are variable in shape and size growing up to 3.5 in. long, glabrous, and usually serrate. Leaves are dark green above and lighter green below.
Flower
The flowers are bright yellow blooming in in terminal clusters that are 12” to 20” long by 8” to 10” wide from early to mid-summer .Flowers are 20 mm long with 5 petals and 7-8 yellow stamens.
Fruit
The oval fruits are pink capsules held in drooping clusters and are from 1 - 3 in. long. Seeds are black.
Ecological Threat
Koelreuteria elegans can thrives in a variety of habitats such as disturbed sites, wetlands, uplands, or adjacent to landscape plantings.
