Japanese clover is an annual plant that can reach 16 in. (40 cm) in height. Leaves are alternate, trifoliate, petiolate and up to ¾ in. (4 cm) long. Leaves are subtended with 0.1-0.6 in. (3-6 mm) long, lance-shaped stipules. Flowers are pink, purple and white, 0.2-0.3 in. (5-8 mm) long and papilionaceous. Fruits are 0.2 in. (4 mm) long legumes and each contain a single seed. Japanese clover occurs in fields, open woods, roadsides and other disturbed sites. It is native to Asia and was introduced into the United States around 1850. |
